IT Band Syndrome
Illiotibial Band Syndrome, also called IT Band Syndrome, is a condition that affects most athletes at one time or another in their lives. An inflammation of the muscle tissue that connects the knee, pelvis, and outer thigh, Illiotibial Band Syndrome can be extremely painful. Runners IT Band problems should be addressed as quickly as possible.
IT Band Syndrome is caused by a number of variables. It is most commonly seen in runners, due to the continual motion of their legs and flexing of the knee joint. Others who may experience illiotibial band pain are those with abnormal foot arches, legs with uneven length, and over-pronators. Surprisingly, runners it band problems can also be caused by wearing the wrong shoes. Running shoes should be tested before being purchased to make sure they absorb shock well enough to keep impact stress from affecting the knee and hip joints.
Some signs and symptoms of ITBS include, but are not limited to, knee pain, hip pain, a tingling sensation in the leg, or general swelling of the area. Runners who develop ITBS usually experience a tightening of the band due to running on hard surfaces or up and down stairs. However other athletes are at risk for developing Illiotibial Band Syndrome, particularly cyclists and martial artists, because of the extreme pressure often placed on legs and feet.
The most common treatment for illiotibial band injury is rest, ice, compression, and elevation. When used in this order, this technique helps to ease inflammation and reduce swelling. Some doctors recommend using foam rollers to loosen the band, especially for athletes who plan to continue training with ITBS. For runners who do not normally warm-up during training, stretching may be a good treatment alternative to help to ease the pain. It is not a good idea to engage in demanding physical activity with this kind of injury, as it can lead to more serious problems.
