Back off before adding more. A Four-Week Introduction to Speed Work Getting started does not require a track or a coach. This simple, progressive structure will carry you through your first month of speed training with enough challenge to drive adaptation and enough restraint to protect your body. Week one: Run 6 hard efforts of 30 seconds each with 90 seconds of walking or easy jogging recovery between them. Gear That Matches the Intensity Speed sessions are not the same as easy runs. You are stopping, accelerating, sometimes changing direction, and doing all of it repeatedly within a single session. That changes what you need from your shorts in ways that matter more than most runners realize before their first interval workout. Why Liner Support Changes Everything During Intervals Liner support is the feature most runners overlook until they do their first set of sprints without it. During hard efforts, your stride opens up considerably. Your knees lift higher, your hips drive forward, and the motion is more aggressive than what happens at an easy jog. Fabric and Fit Under Fast Conditions Lightweight, moisture-wicking fabric is a baseline requirement for any running short, but it matters even more during speed work because you sweat harder and your core temperature rises faster. Look for shorts that move moisture away from the skin rather than absorbing and holding it. Damp, heavy fabric chafes badly by the fourth or fifth interval, and that discomfort compounds quickly when you still have several reps left. A waistband that stays put is also worth prioritizing. Some less expensive shorts roll down or shift during aggressive movement, which forces mid-session adjustments that break your rhythm. A double-layer waistband or a secure drawstring solves this without adding bulk or noticeable weight. You want your shorts to disappear once you are moving, not remind you they exist.
